Commercial Drones Are a Disruptive Technology

A disruptive technology is any technology that opens new markets, lowers product prices, and makes older products obsolete. Commercial drones are a very disruptive technology. This is what makes the industry so interesting. For example, commercial drone pilots are photographing and videoing real estate properties for sale. Being able to view a home from 100 feet up gives buyers an additional perspective, and in many cases, this added value brings more potential buyers to tour the home. There are many more examples of emerging markets like this one. Precision agriculture is another area where commercial drones are disrupting the market. Farmers have had low-resolution satellite imagery available to them for more than a decade, but high-resolution drone imaging offers much more precision than existing satellite imagery. This enables farmers to lower their operational costs because they can precisely pinpoint areas of concern. Dangerous jobs, particularly infrastructure inspections, are being performed by commercial drones using high-resolution imaging with artificial intelligence packages, which can spot problems from afar.
